“Blue Moon”
“And what a spectacle they found! The lake stretched out flat and still as an immense piece of plate glass. Cobalt blue in color, the water reflected the hue of the sky, but a single shade lighter. The immense moon, very low on the horizon, gazed upon its twin floating on the surface of the lake. The two moons perfectly resembled each other. The trees edging the far side of the lake cast moonlit shadows over the still waters. Both the trees and the shadows were as black as octopus ink. Combined, they resembled the graph of an EEG readout, or, as they had to Lucinda and her friends twenty-five years before, the skeleton of a great fish. The luminous gray-whiteness of the moon and its reflection combined with the perfectly smooth, deep blue surfaces of the sky and lake to produce an uncanny atmosphere. It felt as though the scene had been set for the occurrence of something extraordinary. The friends thought that they had walked onto the stage of an incipient natural phenomenon.”LikeCommentShare
