“The bus slowed to pass over a steel bridge spanning a deep canyon. In the soft morning light the plant growth below the bridge showed the color and texture of peat moss. The trees climbing up the banks above the bridge, protected as they were from the sunshine by a rim of encircling hills, shone with the soft coolness of Constable’s foliage in the ‘Cornfield.’ The hills themselves, set back one from another, and enveloped in luminous mist, seemed to be in the process of manifesting out of nothingness. For the first time since arriving in India, Theo felt the ancient spell of Bharata begin to exert itself on his soul. These woods and hills, these deeper and lighter colors, these shadows and muted lights spoke to him of profound mystery. There were only the first hints now, but these hints foreshadowed greater mysteries to come.”
