“A Miracle”
“The teacher-beggar pointed to a dead bird under the bush beside him. He picked it up, and the bird shivered. He stroked it, and the bird slightly ruffled its feathers. He blew air into its beak, and the bird began to hop about on his hand. The reviver looked at Theo, who knew that he was supposed to simply accept this feat, but could not manage to do so. Then the man covered the bird with both hands. When he opened them, a gorgeous, bright-pink butterfly was revealed. These were like the tricks of a master magician, the difference being that in this situation they were not tricks. Lifting up his hand, the magus encouraged the butterfly to test its wings, which it successfully did, fluttering off into the clear morning air.”
