“Lotus Gathering”
“In the distance, I saw two young women carefully balancing themselves in a canoe as they bent over its side to gather lotuses. There was such grace in the way they slowly arched their backs and reached down to take the flowers, as if they were first seeking permission from the local deity before performing the act. Their deep-black hair hung straight down as they leaned toward the water. I watched with a sense of violation; I seemed to be inappropriately peeking into a sacred ceremony of the native people.”
