“Rumors and Speculation”

“After these rumors had been rife for about a year, a new one surfaced. It claimed that people were disappearing from their normal lives just as if they had never been there. The rumor was that these people had somehow transported themselves to “heaven on earth.” Online chat groups generated reams of pages speculating about who had disappeared and how they had managed to do so. The crazies claimed that they had been kidnapped and taken to a secret location for unknown purposes, but the sane firmly believed that these lucky souls had found a sort of spiritual wormhole through which they could magically ship themselves to the place thousands of people urgently wanted to be. It was fascinating that all this buzz about heaven on earth was ignored by the major media outlets and, of course, by the scientific community. The reason for the latter’s obliviousness one could certainly understand: nothing whatsoever could be known about it for certain. But it was odd that all the worldwide curiosity about the place suspected to be so marvelous did not generate more coverage on television or in print. The suspicions about this Shangri-la seemed to be filtering through the subtle nervous system of the world’s awareness, to be infiltrating its collective mind in a quiet albeit persistent manner.” (from “Palace of Perfect Wisdom”)
