“The sky seemed to be constantly at war now. Its cannon would thunder and its rifle fire crack. Ranks of nebular vehicles raced forward; explosions flashed all around them. Armies would meet and clash and then the welkin would be left with the detritus of battle: shreds of cloud, immense bruises, disabled tanks, and torn forests. Fury would flare and later subside. Skirmishes would be countered and neutralized. Torrential downpours would drown the fight to a halt. Brief amnesties would end in renewed carnage. White flags waved surrender, but the enemy ignored them and surged violently forward.”
