“The Sheikh”

“The Sheikh now looked around before answering. He pulled several times on his beard. “This Palace is like the finest mosque imaginable. It is like the Kaaba for all faiths and beliefs. Here I find that everyone is constantly in prayer. Every breath here is devoted to Allah. Every action is intended to glorify Him.” By now, the others had caught up to Gilberto. They greeted the Sheikh respectfully, and he said, “May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you.” The moment these words came out of the Sheikh’s mouth, the four friends felt a cool breeze flutter around them. The air smelled of rose attar. A delicious sense of tranquility enfolded them. These sensations were so pleasant that the friends remained motionless for several minutes. They finally became aware of motion nearby. The Sheikh had risen and was bidding them goodbye. They all bowed and smiled thankfully.” (from “Palace of Perfect Wisdom”)
