“‘As you gaze out on the beauty of God’s creation, my children, your mind stops working, and you abandon yourself completely to the wonders of his work. See how happy you feel once you stop thinking?’ And the monk’s words rang true. The peace of God could truly be felt as they looked out in awe at the perfect tranquility and sheer loveliness that lay before them. Silence surrounded them. Not even a bird called. The sea washed softly against the beach. The gemmy water looked too beautiful to be real. Distant Lemnos might have been fashioned out of mist. ‘You see now that you become aware of stillness once thoughts are laid aside. More than that, though, you begin to melt into all that you had formerly thought separate from yourself. You are that sea sparkling with a million diamonds. You are that still blue sky expanding out forever. You are the image of God, as is all that you see before you.’”
