“Her Old Home”
“Finally, Gwyneth stopped dead on the road and placed one hand above her eyes. She was peering into the near distance. “Well, you could just knock me over with a feather!” she exclaimed. The girls followed her eyes and saw a simple, old, board house of a style more than a hundred years old. “That’s my house! That’s the one my great-great-grandpa built more than a hundred years ago. How the heck it got here, I don’t know. But that’s it!” They all walked up to the front porch, where Gwyneth found the identical swing she had passed endless evenings on as a child. The paint was peeling on the floor of the porch, just as it had back at home. The screen door whined in protest when they opened it. “That thing always did squeak!” The hallway walls were hung with the old familiar family portraits. That ever-so-well-remembered smell filled the air, a scent combining the evaporation of fried doughnuts, the wet hair of beloved dogs, the smoke from a poorly drafted fireplace, the lemon oil used to polish the dining room table, the musty smell of damp clothes left out to dry, and the residue of Old Spice and Avon perfume.” (from “Palace of Perfect Wisdom”)
