“Spirit Dance”

“At one point in the ceremony, when the intensity of the chanting climaxed, everyone saw something amazing. The flames of the fires came alive and began to dance! Although they didn’t look like any sort of creature the congregated observers had ever before seen, these dancing flames were most certainly alive. They had arms and bodies and heads. They moved in rhythm with the chanting. They arced and bent, twisted and leapt in perfect accordance with the modulations of the priests’ voices. And there was about them such an alluring quality that their viewers began to sway and twist with them. Kira looked out over the crowd and saw that even the very oldest residents of the Palace were smiling and moving in tune with the silent music heard by the flames. They had kindled a response in the hearts and bodies of all those who watched them. Soon, they rose out of the fire and continued their terpsichorean performance in the free air. They would dance individually and then unite, holding one another’s fiery hands, and move in circles. But they always danced in rhythm with the chanted words of the officiating priests.” (from “Palace of Perfect Wisdom”)
