“The Love Lesson”

‘Over the course of what turned out to be an eight-hour ride, Vern shared his philosophy of life with the young man. It centered on loving others. “What you come to realize, son, is that love is the only really important thing we have to give each other in life. What’s a present, a TV or a new car, compared with the genuine expression of love? Things don’t matter much, but caring about other people matters a whole great big deal!” he enthused. And Gilberto could only smile. When the time came to say goodbye, Vern pulled the car off the road and got out. He put his arm around the boy’s shoulder and pointed up at the glinting stars. “You feel that mystery, son. You feel that magic.” Both gazed wonderingly at those blazing balls of light separated from them by unfathomable distances. “But you know, as I do, that we have inside us something so precious that it makes the value of ten million stars nothing. Find that, in there,” he tapped lightly on Gilberto’s chest, “and you will have found heaven on earth.”’ (from “Palace of Perfect Wisdom”)
